NEW: Limited edition signed prints of this image now available the Left vs Right
political spectrum. A collaboration between David McCandless and information
artist Stefanie Posavec, taken from my book The Visual Miscellaneum
(out Nov 10th).
Of course, the political spectrum is not quite so polarised. Actually, it’s more of
a diamond shape, apparently. But this is how it’s mostly presented via the media
– left wing vs. right wing, liberal vs. conservative, Labour vs Tory. And perhaps in
our minds too…
Well, certainly in my mind. Researching this showed me that, despite my
inevitable journalistic lean to the ‘left’, I am actually a bit more ‘right’ than I
suspected.
This kind of visual approach to mapping concepts really excites me. I like the
way it coaxes me to entertain two apparently contradictory value systems at
the same time. Or, in other words, I like the way it f**ks with my head.
I’ve got a few more of these coming from my book. They do a similar act of
mind-flossing. Stay tuned.
Oh and if there’s enough demand, we’re going to do a signed, limited edition
poster run of this image before Christmas. Email informationisbeautiful [at]
gmail [dot] com if you’re interested.

** David McCandless Bio **
David McCandless has been a writer for twenty years. His work has appeared
in over thirty magazines and newspapers in the UK and the US. They include
Wired, The Guardian, Tank, and The Independent.
In 2000 , he was the editor and writer of seethru.co.uk, the interactive half of
the BBC2 / World Productions drama series, Attachments. The Guardian
called it the "best British webzine". It was one of the first websites to feature
something called a 'blog'. Now look what's happened...
He started his career aged 15, writing for cult video games magazines
Your Sinclair, Zero and PC Zone. By 1995, his eerie talent for video games
had led to him clinching that much coveted title, UK Doom Champion. He
then went on to represent his country in the world finals. Unfortuantely he lost,
in the first round, to a 14 year old boy from New Jersey with a moustache.
He spends some of his spare time noodling with desktop music.
His self-released LP, Smoother & Faster, won Q Magazine's StarMaker award
in 1997 and was featured on Channel 5 news and the BBC World Service. He
has since sold over 40 copies.
He has just written his first book, The Internet Now In Handy Book Form.
And, no, he doesn't know why he's writing this in the third person either.
It just seems to help.
